Carrozzeria Ghia (Ghia Bodyworks) was one of Italy’s oldest and most revered coachbuilders. Founded in 1915 by namesake Giacinto Ghia, the company came to prominence by building lightweight aluminum bodies for sporting marques like Alfa Romeo and Lancia. Similarly, Ghia purchased chassis and mechanical components from Fiat to produce their own interpretations of Fiat models. Included was the unique sporting interpretation of the Fiat 1500 Saloon that was redesigned into a 2-seat Gran Turismo model, the Ghia 1500 GT.
Debuted at the 1962 Turin Motor Show, the Ghia 1500 GT was produced between 1963 and 1967. The car was built on a shortened Fiat 1500 platform. The cropped 92.1” wheelbase, along with a tubular front subframe, shifted the engine and transmission rearward into a more mid-engine design. This combination improved weight distribution and handling. In the end, utilizing Fiat’s mechanical backbone with Ghia’s signature bodywork, the 1500 GT combined both sporting function and elegant beauty. With only 846 units produced, the Ghia 1500 GT stands as a collector's dream.
This 1964 Ghia 1500 GT shell is a Ghia aficionado's project vehicle. No engine or transmission is included. The body and frame are mostly solid with alot of surface rust visible. The instrument cluster is still mounted in-place, and several interior and exterior parts are included inside the car, including a solid grill frame.
Honestly, this car is not for the feint of heart. It is either a component vehicle or a BIG dreamers project that will take much effort and ingenuity to bring back to running condition. That said, and as seen in the images, these cars have a classic elegance and may be fantastic investments. If your interest is piqued, give us a call.
